According to a new study, POSTECH and the University of Ulsan in Korea collaborated to develop omnidirectionally stretchy pressure sensors that were inspired by crocodile skin. The researchers stated that for many industries, such as prosthetic limbs, healthcare, and rehabilitation, electronic skin with many senses is crucial.

For the new development, they got their inspiration from the unique sensory organ of crocodile skin and developed pressure sensors with microdomes and wrinkled surfaces. In order to create a highly stretchy pressure sensor, the researchers effectively imitated the structure and operation of the crocodiles sensory organ.

They developed a pressure sensor that exceeds the capabilities of currently existing pressure sensors by developing an elastomeric polymer with hemispheric structure and fine wrinkles that may include either long or short nanowires. This unique sensor effectively maintains its sensitivity even after it is stretched in one or two separate directions, unlike existing sensors that lose their sensitivity when mechanical deformations are applied.

The researchers explained that when an external mechanical force is applied, the wrinkled structure unfolds, reducing stress on the hemispheric sensing area, which is responsible for detecting applied pressure. Due to this stress reduction, the sensors can preserve their pressure sensitivity. The researchers further claimed that the new sensor exhibits exceptional sensitivity to pressure, even when stretched up to 100% in one direction and 50% in two different directions, respectively.
